Go Native: Volunteers Help to Restore Biscayne Spoil Island

August 2015 – Restoration work is underway in Biscayne National Park on one of two spoil islands located just south of Black Point Marina. Park workers used chainsaws and a chipper earlier this year to strip exotic vegetation from the small island.

Next up: Project managers are planning to replant the island with funding support from SFNPT, replacing Brazilian pepper with red mangroves, cocoplum and other natives to anchor the island, improve water quality and provide habitat for native wildlife.

The SFNPT is assembling a team of volunteers to help with the planting in late September.

Contact the SFNPT at info@southfloridaparks.org if you would like to volunteer.
