Saving Cape Sable

March 2015 – Everglades National Park has begun work on a restoration plan for Cape Sable with funding support from the SFNPT and the Everglades Foundation. Interior wetlands on the cape have been degraded over time by an influx of salt water through man-made breaches in the cape’s natural berm. The park plugged two canals in 2011 but tidal saltwater is still reaching the interior via four openings: House Ditch, Slagle Ditch, Raulerson Canal and East Side Creek. As part of an environmental assessment, the park will look at ways to plug the openings and restore the interior wetlands. The public is invited to comment; the deadline to do so is March 8.
