December 2017 – Got a story to tell, and does it involve water ??? Biscayne National Park is recruiting storytellers for its first-ever Story Slam on Saturday January 20 as part of the park’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2018. Here’s the park’s pitch:
On January 20, 2018, the first-ever Biscayne National Park Story Slam will take place at the park’s Dante Fascell Visitor Center at 7:00 pm. We are seeking 5-7 minute TRUE, personal stories to be told live at a gorgeous bayside venue, complete with campfire and s’mores!
Our theme for the evening will be “Water.” Salt or fresh, flowing or still, frozen or falling, floating on top or diving below, our lives are touched by water every day in so many ways.
Unlike The Moth and some other wonderful story slams, ours will be curated, meaning that storytellers will definitely get to tell their story (as opposed to having a name drawn out of a hat), will have an opportunity to get some feedback on their story before going live, and… the stories will be professionally judged and CASH prizes will be awarded by the South Florida National Parks Trust.
The Biscayne National Park Story Slam and other events celebrating the park’s 50th anniversary in 2018 are supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the Knight Arts Challenge, the Guerra Family Foundation and other donors.
The Story Slam will be hosted by Gabriela Fernandez from The Moth in Miami.
And please help to spread the word!
